From September 20 to 21 (local time), 2017, the annual orientation activities of the Confucius Institute (CI) at Bangor University were held in the university hall.

During these activities, the faculty from the CI gave performances of pipa (a plucked string instrument with a fretted fingerboard), calligraphy, ethnic songs and others, dressing in traditional Chinese costumes from the Han and Tang dynasties. Also, volunteer Chinese teachers warmly introduced to the audiences the cultural activities of the CI, such as Tai Chi workshops, summer camps and other activities. During the two-day event, one of the most popular activities is called “Giving Everyone a Chinese Name”: teachers from the CI chose Chinese names that has similar pronunciations or meanings to their English names for the local students. The teachers also wrote these names down for the participants on red card with the Chinese brush.

The orientation activities were highly successful. The CI at Bangor University will continue to strive for better services for all faculty and students in the university and will develop a closer cooperation relationship with the Chinese Students and Scholars Association in Bangor.
