From November 20 to 27, 2014, at the invitation of the China-Japan Friendship Association and Japan-China Friendship Center, 30 CUPL student representatives, led by Mr. Dai Long, associate professor of our School of International Law, participated in the JENESYS2.0 friendship activities held in Japan as members of Chinese college students’ delegation. The 126-strong delegation was made up of teachers and students from CUPL, Peking University Law School, Tsinghua University School of Social Sciences, and China's Chess Academy. As a part of its law sub-group, CUPL delegates joined hands with Japanese counterparts to hold a variety of exchange activities focusing on the theme of "legal education and practice" while observing Japanese society and experiencing its culture on the side.
CUPL delegates visited Tokyo, Nagano-ken and Yokohama-shi.Their field trips can be divided into two parts:
First, trying to understand Japanese legal culture and its related institutions. On November 21, CUPL delegates visited Gakushuin University, known as Japan's "Educational Institution of the Imperial Court". They conducted in-depth exchanges with Japanese law professors and students by attending their moot court classes and lectures given by Gakushuin law students. In addition, they visited the National Diet of Japan (Kokkai Gijidō), the Exhibition Room of juristic documents at the Ministry of Justice, as well as the Supreme Court of Japan, which deepened their understanding of the Japanese administrative and judicial systems.
Second, observing and experiencing Japanese society and its culture. CUPL delegates visited renowned local historical sites, such as the Asakusa Temple and the Matsumoto Castle. They also tried to taste every aspect of traditional local culture by either personally performing the art of flower arrangements (ikebana), or staying in a Japanese style hotspring inn (onsen ryokan) at Nagano-ken.Meanwhile, our delegates also took time to attend lectures given by Mr. Yuji Miyamoto, the former Japanese ambassador to China, and by the government officials of Yokohama.
This friendly trip not only increased our students' understanding of Japanese culture, but also broadened their international vision. During the visit, our delegates behaved excellently for their hosts.Their exchanges with the Japanese staff and students also greatly enhanced the mutual understanding between the two sides and further cemented their friendship.
