A Delegation Headed by CUPL VP Li Shuzhong Visited Czech and Austria En Route to Attend LSGL Annual Meeting

At the invitation of Charles University (CU) of Czech Republic, KOC University of Turkey (the host of the 2014 annual meeting of Law Schools Global League/LSGL) and the University of Vienna of Austria ,CUPL Vice President Li Shuzhong and his delegation paid an academic visit to those three celebrated institutions of higher education. The visits lasted from July 14 to 21, 2014.

On the morning of 14 July, 2014, the delegation visited Charles University which is the most reputable and time-honored university in Czech. They had an in-depth discussion with Prof.Jan Kuklík, Dean of Faculty of Law.

Both sides agreed to carry out cooperative programs in certain areas such as exchanging scholars, allowing CUPL doctorate candidates under “State Sponsored Postgraduate Study-Abroad Program for the Construction of High-level Chinese Universities”, to further their studies on CU campus, admitting CUPL students under “Excellent Undergraduates for International Exchange Project”, running summer schools jointly and conducting collaborative research on some topics of shared interest, like legal & social transformations in China and Eastern Europe. In addition, they both expressed a desire to sign a detailed agreement for the envisioned cooperation and its subsequent implmentation. After the meeting, the delegation visited the school's moot court, academic hall, library and other teaching and office facilities of CU Faculty of Law .

On the afternoon of the same day, Prof. Lenka Rovna, CU Vice-Rector for European affairs met with the CUPL delegation. Ms. Ivana Halaskova, the Head of CU International Relationship Department also took part in the talks. After briefly summarizing the achievements of the morning’s dialogue, Li Shuzhong pointed out that CUPL is not only the core of Chinese legal education, but also has many other predominant disciplines, such as political science, management, sociology, etc. He expressed the wish that the two partners could expand their collaboration far beyond the scope of jurisprudence into the fields of other humanities and social sciences. Mr. Rovná showed strong interest in those proposals and indicated that CU is willing to gradually extend cooperative areas, and to launch cooperative programs with our university.

From July 16 to 18, the delegation was invited to attend the 2014 Annual Meeting of LSGL in KOC University. LSGL is the first of its kind among university law schools around the globe. It consists of 24 top-notch law schools from 20 countries, like Northwestern University of US, McGill University of Canada ,University of Edinburgh at UK , Sciences Po of France and so on. This year was the first time CUPL sent delegation to the annual meeting since its accession to that renowned organization. A total of 57 members attended this session.

In order to take advantage of the visit,the delegation held separate talks with old friends and new partners, such as Northwestern University of the US, National Autonomous University of Singapore ,Catholic University of Portugal, and University of Cape Town in South Africa. By doing that, they reached multiple agreements of intent on future academic cooperation. Vice President Li Shuzhong and Prof. Xue Gangling also spent time visiting two CUPL students who were attending the current LSGL Summer Project, and asked about their learning and living situations with deep concern.

On 21 July, the delegation visited the University of Vienna, the most prestigious university in Austria. Prof.Heinz Fassmann, Vice Rector for Human Resources Development and International Relations, Ms. Lottelis Moser, Head of the International Office and Prof. Li Xiade(Richard Trappl), Director of Confucius Institute at that University as well as Honorary Professor of CUPL extended their warm welcome to our delegation. In the ensuing meeting, the two sides reviewed their working-together history since they formally established the connection in 2009. Their fruitful collaboration included: dispatching delegations to visit each other, co-organizing international seminars like “Forum on China & Europe Legal History”, conducting research and together publishing the related academic books in English, inviting well-known scholars to deliver speeches on the other side’s campus, exchanging students, admitting CUPL doctorate candidates under “State Sponsored Postgraduate Study-Abroad Program for the Construction of High-level Chinese Universities” to further their studies at University of Vienna, etc. The hosts and guests all spoke highly of the dimensionally well-defined, high-efficiency cooperation in diversified forms. Both sides expressed willingness to give all-out support to the sustainable exchange between the two universities and to try to advance that cooperation to a higher level. After the meeting, Li Shuzhong and Prof. Fassmann, on behalf of the two sides, renewed the existing agreement between CUPL and the University of Vienna on academic cooperation and exchange.
