Sweden’s CSR Ambassador Visits CUPL

On the afternoon of March 27, 2014, at Xueyuan Lu Campus, Vice President Zhu Yong met with Mr. Bengt Johansson, Sweden’s Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) Ambassador, and Ms. Maisoun Jabali, Counselor and Head of the Centre for Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) of the Embassy of Sweden in Beijing, China.

On behalf of CUPL President Huang Jin, Vice President Zhu extended a warm welcome to Ambassador Bengt and his party’s visit. He briefed our guests on the background of CUPL and its historical development as well as the range of academic disciplines, the current situation of legal education in China, and CUPL’s current status and its achievements in the arena of domestic legal training, especially its rapid development after our country adopted the reform and opening-up policy. When talking about our strategy for internationalized administration, Vice President Zhu reviewed exchanges between some famous Swedish universities and CUPL in the past few years, for instance, our cooperation with Lund University within the China-EU School of Law program, in State-Sponsored Study Abroad Programs for High-Level Universities, in exchanges of teachers and students, etc. Vice President Zhu expressed his hope to utilize Sweden's experience and ideas to strengthen our academic research on CSR, and to promote its implementation among stakeholders for the purpose of facilitating the smooth transformation of Chinese society.

After listening to Vice President Zhu’s introduction, Mr. Bengt was glad to learn of the considerable progress already achieved in the field of Chinese legal education, including at CUPL. He made detailed inquiries about other subjects our university offers, especially Political Science. Mr. Bengt also informed the CUPL representatives of the tradition of Swedish higher education and four famous Swedish law schools including Faculty of Law at Lund University. He said that he would bring CUPL into contact with Swedish colleges and universities, such as Uppsala University, and Stockholm University. Furthermore, he specifically introduced the CSR research cooperation program conducted by the Swedish Embassy in China.

After the meeting, Mr. Bengt delivered a lecture titled “International Legal Institutions and the Practice of Sweden on Corporate Social Responsibility” to our teachers and students from the School of International Law and other Schools. Professor Kong Qingjiang, Dean of the School of International Law presided at the lecture.
