On the morning of October 11, Prof. Hu Ming, Council Chair of China University of Political Science and Law (CUPL), warmly welcomed President Jacques Frémont of the University of Ottawa and his delegation at the Haidian campus. The visiting delegation included Jennifer Adams, Chair of the University’s Board of Governors; Julie St-Pierre, Vice President of the University of Ottawa; and Jiao Jie, Senior Advisor to the President. CUPL Vice President, Lu Chunlong, also attended the meeting.

Hu Ming, representing CUPL, extended a cordial welcome to President Frémont and his team. He then provided an overview of CUPL's recent development, with a focus on its notable achievements in discipline development, talent cultivation, research, faculty development, and international cooperation. He emphasized CUPL’s role as the leading institution for legal education in China and a key hub for the humanities and social sciences, highlighting the university’s societal mission. He emphasized that the University of Ottawa, as one of Canada’s top research universities, is a key global strategic partner of CUPL. Over the yearas, the two universities have successfully carried out practical collaborations, including student exchanges, faculty visits, and various short- and long- term programs. Since CUPL President Ma Huaide’s visit to Ottawa in April this year, where the cooperation agreement was renewed, academic exchanges and personnel visits between the two universities have become even more frequent. Looking ahead, Hu expressed his hope that the two institutions could further expand their cooperative efforts, accelerate the pace of exchanges, and explore new models of collaboration across a wider range of disciplines, contributing more to Sino-Canadian cultural exchange.

President Jacques Frémont expressed his gratitude for CUPL’s warm reception and fondly recalled his numerous visits to CUPL over the past 20 years, during which he engaged in teaching and academic exchanges. He then provided an overview of Canada’s higher education landscape and the University of Ottawa’s educational mission, academic structure, and talent cultivation programs. Frémont underscored the Univeristy of Ottawa’s strong commitment to its partnership with CUPL, particularly in the fields of law and social sciences. He also expressed enthusiasm for promoting joint research and interdisciplinary in the future, envisioning increased opportunities for exchanges between faculty and students from both universities, further elevating the partnership between the two universities.
Following the speeches, representatives from both universities engaged in in-depth discussion on the next steps for their collaboration and reached a consensus.
