From October 4 to 7, a delegation of nine representatives from China University of Political Science and Law (CUPL) traveled to the University of New South Wales in Australia, emerging victorious in the 16th HUAXIA Cup International Chinese Debating Championship. The CUPL debate team secured the championship by defeating Wuhan University in the final on October 7, marking their second consecutive win after the 15th HUAXIA Cup.
The Prestigious Championship
The 16th HUAXIA Cup International Chinese Debating Championship, organized by the University of New South Wales Chinese Debating Club and supported by the New South Wales Chinese Students and Scholars Association, witnessed 24 prominent university debate teams from around the world. Held at the Kensington Campus of the University of New South Wales in Sydney, Australia, the event spanned from October 4 to 7, 2023, featuring group stage matches, elimination rounds, semi-finals, and the grand finale.
Path to Victory
In this edition of the championship, CUPL's debate team engaged in five matches. Triumphing over the University of Adelaide and East China University of Science and Technology in the group stage matches, they proceeded to the elimination rounds. Guided by their accompanying teachers, the team defeated King's College London, advanced to the semi-finals, and ultimately secured their place in the final by defeating Zhejiang University of Technology.
The Grand Finale
In the championship match against Wuhan University, CUPL took the counterclaim position. Artfully integrating compelling Chinese narratives into their arguments, the team adeptly navigated the challenges posed by the opposition. The final result was a resounding victory, with CUPL securing an 8:2 scoreline and clinching the overall championship of the 16th HUAXIA Cup International Chinese Debate Championship.

Outstanding Performances
The CUPL debate team consisted of Du Yuxuan, a postgraduate student from the Law School, Zhao Xinbo, a postgraduate student from the Business School, Chen Rongyao, a postgraduate student from the School of Juris Master, Miao Zhengzhi, a postgraduate student from the School of Criminal Justice, Lu Yao, an undergraduate student from the School of Foreign Studies, and Sun Yizhou, an undergraduate student from the School of Political Science and Public Administration. Miao Zhengzhi and Chen Rongyao were recognized as the Best Debaters in the group stage matches and the final, respectively.
Under the guidance of teachers Liu Shuangqing, Han Xiao, and Huang Ziyang from the Guangming School of Journalism and Communication, School of Political Science and Public Administration, and CUPL Youth League Committee, respectively, the team extensively deliberated and prepared for topics such as environmental conservation, journalism professions, legal values, and cultural heritage. Demonstrating a wealth of professional knowledge and outstanding debating skills, the CUPL debate team clinched the championship in the 16th HUAXIA Cup International Chinese Debate Championship.
