On November 15, the 77th session of the United Nations General Assembly elected judges to the United Nations Appeals Tribunal (UNAT) and the Dispute Tribunal (UNDT). Upon the recommendation by the UN Internal Justice Council, Gao Xiaoli and Sun Xiangzhuang, judges from the Supreme People's Court of the People's Republic of China were elected judge to the UNAT and the UNDT respectively. It is noted that the UNAT has seven judges, working at the UN Headquarters in New York. The UNDT has nine judges, working in New York, Geneva and Nairobi. Both Tribunals are important agencies of the United Nations internal justice system, playing an important role in safeguarding the legitimate rights and interests of UN staff and promoting the effective functioning of the UN system based on the rule of law.
This is the first time that Chinese candidates were elected to these positions as part of both Tribunals since the UNAT and the UNDT had been established.
