On the 3rd and 4th of October, 2016, the International Seminar on Economic Law concerning the Belt & Road Initiative co-sponsored by the Delegation of China University of Political Science and Law (CUPL), School of Law at the University of Bucharest and the Confucius Institute at the University of Bucharest (the CI at UB) was held successfully at the CI at UB. A delegation of CUPL, scholars and students in the School of Law at the University of Bucharest attended the seminar together with Prof. Dong Jingbo, Chinese Co-Director of the CI at UB, Prof. Luminita Balan, Romanian Co-Director of the CI at UB as well as volunteer teachers.

At the beginning of the seminar, the Dean of the School of Law at the University of Bucharest expressed his warm welcome to the delegation and his gratitude to the CI at UB for building an important bridge between China and Romania during past law conferences organized by the two countries. This seminar was hosted by the Chinese co-director of the CI at UB, Prof. Dong Jingbo, who gave a brief introduction to the guests from both China and Romania and announced the theme of the seminar. Then, the attendees delivered key-note speeches on the theme of “Economic Law Issues concerning the Belt and Road Initiative.” They shared their latest research findings in various fields, including international trade law, international finance law and international investment law. They also had an in-depth discussion on topics such as the adoption of the UN Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods (CISG), the internationalization of the Chinese RMB, the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank (AIIB), Sino-Romanian Antitrust Law, and China-EU Bilateral Investment Treaty. Professors of law at the University of Bucharest appreciated the opportunity to discuss international economic issues concerning the Belt and Road Initiative with law experts and professors from China. They believed the seminar effectively promoted the communication of law circles between China and Romania and were looking forward to more cooperation and communication between the Schools of Law at the University of Bucharest and CUPL.

The success of the Belt and Road Initiative could not be possible without research on the transnational legal system. Romania is a major country in the Belt and Road Initiative and China is the biggest trading partner with Romania, only second to the EU. The cooperation between the two parties in such fields of energy and infrastructure has achieved positive progress. Against this backdrop, Sino-Romanian legal exchange has become increasingly necessary. That’s why the CI at UB organized this seminar. Henceforth, the CI at UB, based on its leading law department, will continue to promote Sino-Romanian communication on law and will provide support for legal research on the Belt and Road Initiative.
