On the morning of June 20, 2016, Prof. Huang Jin, President of CUPL, met with H.E. Ms. Vera Jourová, EU Commissioner for Justice, Consumers and Gender Equality, who was accompanied by H.E. Mr. Hans-Dietmar Schweisgut, EU Ambassador to China at the Haidian Campus.
During the meeting, President Huang first extended his warm welcome to H.E. Ms. Vera Jourová and her delegation and gave a brief overview of CUPL. President Huang pointed out that, CUPL paid great attention to the exchanges and cooperation with universities in Europe, especially in Eastern European Countries, including the Charles University in Prague where Ms. Vera Jourová once studied and which is also an important partner of CUPL. He mentioned that CUPLhas prioritized internationalization as its development strategy and principal objective. He also said that the visit of Commissioner Jourová would open a new chapter for the exchanges and cooperation between the EU and CUPL.
Commissioner Jourová said that she was very excited to visit CUPL. The visit would also facilitate the launching of a dialogue mechanism for legal matters, as well as for such topics as electronization, digital commerce and product safety between China and Europe. She mentioned that it was a great pleasure to have the opportunity to visit CUPL and meet with teachers and students here. People-to-people exchange is the most important part in bilateral cultural exchanges. She also expressed the sincere hope that China-EU School of Law (CESL) at CUPL would seize the opportunity, address challenges and organize more colorful activities so as to enhance mutual understanding. Commissioner Jourová would continue to play an active role in promoting cooperation between CUPL and European partners.
After the meeting, Commissioner Jourová had a face-to-face discussion with staff and student representatives. She illustrated her stance and expectation on relevant issues, including the establishment of CESL, the history and development China-EU cooperation in policy and law, the operation and demands of the EU single market and the China-EU cooperation dialogue on law against the backdrop of the EU single market. More than 60 teachers and students from CESL and China-Germany School of Law at CUPL participated in the discussion. Finally, Commissioner Jourová wrote on the message board, "Thank you very much for giving me an opportunity to have a fruitful dialogue with the university and also meet the students who should continue the cooperation between the EU and China in practical life."
