Fifteen CUPL teams, by sparing no efforts in four days and three nights, stood out with an excellent performance in the 23rd“Higher Education Cup/Contemporary Undergraduate Mathematical Contest in Modeling(23rd CUMCM)”. Our players were awarded with two national first prizes, two national second prizes, four first prizes and three second prizes in Beijing Division respectively. For our team members, it was not only the best results since their first participation in 2007, but also demonstrated a comparatively amazing breakthrough in the field of natural science studies and teaching in a comprehensive university like CUPL, where its main attention was constantly focused on the studies of laws.
Established in 1992, CUMCM (for Chinese students, the first “C” means China) is held annually and has evolved into China’s largest contest in terms of its scale and one of the influential competitions for basic subjects both at home and abroad. In 2014, a total of 25, 347 teams(over 70,000 student attendees)from 1,338 universities and colleges (China mainland, Hong Kong SAR, Macao SAR, Singapore, U.S.A.) participated in the game. The multiple goals of CUMCM are: to motivate students’ desire to learn mathmatics;to improve their comprehensive abilities to solve real-world problems by setting up mathematical models and using computer technology;to cultivate their innovative spirit and raise their awareness of teamwork;as well as to push forward the mathematical teaching reform in universities and colleges, which is further materialized in the improvement of its teaching system, its content and its methods.
