China-EU School of Law

The China-EU School of Law (CESL) at the China University of Political Science and Law (CUPL) is the first law school which was approved by the Ministry of Education of the People's Republic of China under the Sino-foreign Schools Agreement. Former Premier Wen Jiabao expressed his hope that "CESL will educate a great cohort of talented legal professionals equipped with knowledge spanning both Chinese and Western law". The ceremony took place at CUPL's Changping campus in the presence of Jose Manuel Barroso, then President of the European Commission, and Li Keqiang, then Vice Premier of the State Council and member of the Standing Committee of the Political Bureau of China's Communist Party.


CESL has set up double master programs in Chinese, European and International Law, a master program in European and International Law, a PhD program in Chinese law and an international master program of Chinese Law as well as a program of Chinese law taught in English. The double master program in Chinese, European and International Law is the most essential three-year program. Upon graduation, the students will receive the Master degree of Chinese Law from CUPL and the LL.M. degree in European and International Law from Hamburg University, Germany. The programs includes Constitutional Law and Administrative Law, Criminal Law, Civil and Commercial Law, Procedural Law, Economic Law, Comparative Law, and International Law. In the first year, the students will study Chinese law in both Chinese and English at the Changping campus, and then go to Hamburg University to take courses on European and International Law and complete their master's degree thesis in English in the second year. In the third year, they will complete a master's degree thesis and take up internship at the Haidian Campus of CUPL. The LL.M. degree in European and International Law is a one-year program, with both Chinese and international students taught in English, while the international master program of Chinese Law is taught in English for only international students for two years. The Chinese law taught in English program is a one-semester abroad program for international visiting students. The CESL enrolls Ph.D. students in legal theory, civil and commercial law and economic law. The training objective is to cultivate high-level legal education and research talents with research ability and international vision.
