President Jacques Frémont of the University of Ottawa Visits CUPL

On the morning of July 27th, Ma Huaide, President of China University of Political Science and Law (CUPL), warmly welcomed Jacques Frémont, President of the University of Ottawa, and his delegation at the Haidian campus. The delegation included Sylvain Charbonneau, Vice President of the University of Ottawa, and Jiao Jie, Director of the China Division of the International Cooperation and Development Department. CUPL's Vice President, Shi Jianzhong, accompanied the meeting. Shi Jianzhong, Vice President of CUPL, attended the meeting.

President Ma, representing CUPL, extended a cordial welcome to President Frémont and provided an overview of CUPL's educational philosophy, discipline construction, faculty development, talent cultivation, scientific research, and international collaboration efforts. Emphasizing the significance of promoting Sino-Canadian educational and cultural exchanges, President Ma applauded President Frémont's longstanding contributions to fostering educational ties between China and Canada. He acknowledged the practical cooperation initiated by both universities within the framework of the "Canadian Students Study in China" program and expressed a desire to expand collaboration across various domains, including talent cultivation, joint research, and faculty and management team development.

In response, President Jacques Frémont expressed gratitude for CUPL's hospitality, likening his return to the CUPL campus as a "homecoming." He fondly reminisced about his initial visit in 2005, recalling the positive experiences of teaching at CUPL and the deep friendships cultivated with CUPL's faculty and students over the years. President Frémont emphasized the University of Ottawa's commitment to strengthening ties with China, citing the ongoing collaboration with CUPL as a testament to this commitment. He envisioned extending cooperation beyond scholar exchanges to encompass all-encompassing collaboration in talent development, research, faculty capacity building, and internationalization.

Shi Jianzhong introduced the scientific research institutions and achievements in country-specific studies of CUPL, and focused on the relevant work carried out by CUPL in interdisciplinary and emerging disciplines. Sylvain Charbonneau commended CUPL's research infrastructure and disciplinary coverage, expressing anticipation for future collaboration to extend beyond scholar exchanges into research institution partnerships.

The meeting concluded with an exchange of opinions on future cooperation plans, attended by Li Juqian, Director of the Office of International Cooperation, Tang Yan, Deputy Director of the Office of International Cooperation and Exchange, and Shu Dangyi, Division Chief of the International Exchange.
