Vice-President Feng Shiyong and His Delegation Attends the Annual Meeting of NAFSA and Visited Relative Colleges and Universities

From May 27 to May 31, Vice-President Feng Shiyong and his delegation attended the 70th Annual Meeting and Education Exhibition of the National Association of Foreign Student Affairs (NAFSA) in Philadelphia, USA. The delegation also visited cooperative partner University of Pennsylvania and met with representatives of North American Alumni.

The annual meeting of NAFSA, the largest international education meeting in the world, is held in late May or early June in the North America every year. Events of the meeting include various academic presentations, workshops, interactive meetings and education exhibitions about international education. This year, nearly 10,000 government officials, staff of prestigious colleges and other people engaged in education from 103 countries and regions in America, Europe, Asia and the Oceania participated in the annual meeting. Organized by China Association for International Exchange of Education of the Ministry of Education of P.R.China, nearly 90 representatives from 36 colleges and universities, including Peking University, Tsinghua University, Beijing Normal University, Renmin University of China, China University of Political Science and Law, Nankai University, Harbin Institute of Technology and Chongqing University, took part in the annual meeting.

The CUPL delegation also attended the opening ceremony of the NAFSA Annual Meeting, the NAFSA Education Exhibition, the “China Reception” hosted by the Consulate General of China in New York at Philadelphia and other events. The delegation also listened to the speech of Laura Bush, former First Lady of the United States, a report on NAFSA and Internationalization of Higher Education delivered by Wu Yanbo, Vice-president of San Francisco State University and former Vive-president of NAFSA, and took part in other academic activities. During the exhibition, the CUPL delegation also hosted or visited the Director and Manager of Asia region of Thames Higher Education, Manager of Asian business of QS, Assistant-President of the Chinese University of Hong Kong and met with dozens of new and old cooperative partners from various countries and regions, such as University of California, Berkeley, Indiana University Bloomington, University of Tokyo, Waseda University, Sung-kwan University of Korea, Hanyang University, Higher School of Economics of National Research University of Russia, Leiden University of Holland, University of Cork of Ireland, and the University of Hong Kong. During these events, CUPL and its partners discussed topics, including enhancing current cooperation, promoting cooperation level, expanding cooperation scope, building new cooperative partnerships and so on.

Afterwards, the delegation visited University of Pennsylvania and met with Rob Crane, Assistant-Director of International Affairs, and Hari M. Osofsky, Dean of Law School and International Affairs School. The two sides exchanged views on how to use the opportunity of building world-class universities and disciplines in China and utilize various domestic and international grants, such as China National Fund for Studying Abroad, to further expand the bilateral cooperation of dominant disciplines and conduct constructive cooperation, including students’ exchange programs, master’s degree programs, joint programs for doctoral students, summer scholarship programs, faculty’s short-term teaching programs, the exchange of executive staff, so as to deepen mutually beneficial and friendly cooperation and finally to establish inter-school cooperative relationships.

During the stay in US, the delegation also visited representatives of North American Alumni of CUPL and CUPL students studying at University of Pennsylvania.

Huang Li, Deputy Director of the Office of Development Planning and Disciplinary Construction of CUPL, Lv Yong, Deputy Director of the Office of International Cooperation and Exchange accompanied Vice-president Feng during this visit.
