A CUPL delegation led by President Prof. Huang Jin visited top universities in Taiwan, including Quemoy University(QU), Chinese Culture University (CCU), Taipei University(TPU), Shih Hsin University (SHU), Soochow University (SU), and others from June 3 to June 8.
On June 3, President Huang and the CUPL delegation visited QU. Dr. Chyi Hwang, the President of QU warmly welcomed the CUPL visitors. The two parties reviewed the history of their exchanges and introduced their school-running characteristics to each other. The two universities also jointly expressed their high expectations about a recently completed cooperation agreement discussed by both parties. After that,the two presidents formally executed the following agreements on behalf of CUPL and QU: the Academic Exchange Cooperation Agreement Between CUPL and QU, the Memorandum Between CUPL and QU on Teaching Exchange Visits & Lecturing, the Agreement Between CUPL and QU on Student Exchange & Their Advanced Studies, as well as the Memorandum Between CUPL and QU on the Joint Cultivation of Graduates. Mr. Chyi-Tsong Chen, the Vice-President of QU and his colleagues also participated in the talk.
CUPL President Huang & QU President Signed Cooperation Agreements
Later that day, President Huang and other CUPL delegates met with Professor Wei-Ta Pan, President of SU and Professor Chia-yin Hung, Dean & Chairperson of School of Law at SU, and their colleagues. President Huang and his counterpart jointly sealed two agreements: the Student Exchange Agreement Between CUPL and SU and the Student Communication Agreement Between CUPL and SU. According to those agreements, the Student Exchange Program, the Advanced Studies Program, and the related Summer School Program will be launched simultaneously with effect from the next Spring Semester by the two sides.
On June 4, the CUPL delegation led by President Huang paid a visit to CCU. The bilateral talk was hosted by CCU President Tien-Rein Lee. Dr. Jen-Hu Chang, the Chair of the CCU Board of Regents, delivered an opening speech. In his remarks, Mr. Chang looked back on the history of exchanges between the two universities and expressed his warm welcome to the CUPL delegates for their second visit. President Huang expressed his hope that the two sides could expand their collaborations beyond the realm of jurisprudence, and thus make greater contributions to the academic exchanges, talent cultivation, and peaceful development across the Taiwan Straits. Dr. Spenser Y. Ho, Dean of CCU College of Law, then briefed the visitors on the position of the academic cooperation between the two universities in recent years,especially the ”First Forum for the Young Jurists Across the Taiwan Straits”, which was successfully held this May.
Later on June 4, President Huang and his party visited the San Shia Campus of TPU and met with Mr. Fu-Jiing Shiue, the President of TPU, and held a discussion with the faculty members and students of its College of Law. In the meeting, President Shiue introduced the background of TPU to the visitors and expressed his hope that the two sides could strengthen their existing cooperation and gradually create close cooperation between them. President Huang remarked that he thought highly of the exchange of teaching staff and students between CUPL and TPU, as well as the joint academic studies conducted by them over the years. After the talk, our delegates met with CUPL exchange students and other exchange students from the Mainland in TPU to learn about their studies and their life on campus. The delegates also asked about the implementation of the related exchange programs and made suggestions on the exchanged students’ studies and living.
CUPL President Huang Met with TPU President
From June 5 to June 6, President Huang and his party attended the Centennial Anniversary of the Establishment of SU School of Law and ”The Legal Education & Academic Research Seminar on Comparative Law and Common Law in Retrospect”. At the ceremony, President Huang delivered a speech on behalf of the Mainland law colleges and universities. President Huang stated that CUPL and SU have jointly unlocked the gate of the legal education exchange across the Taiwan Straits,which has amounted to an indelible contribution. In recent years, the two universities have worked even closer in certain areas, such as talent cultivation, exchange of teaching staff, scientific research, and so on, creating a model of teamwork between Mainland law schools and its Taiwanese counterparts. President Huang hoped the two sides could further their existing cooperation and make even greater contribution to the legal education, talent training,and peaceful development between Taiwan and Mainland China. At the end of his speech, Pres. Huang sincerely wished that SU could create new splendors in the future, and he expressed his belief that the friendship between the two universities remains everlasting and unchanging.
CUPL President Huang remarked at Centennial Ceremony of SU School of Law
At the aforesaid seminar on June 6, President Huang hosted the “Fourth A Section”with the theme of ”The Common Law’s Teaching Methods and its Evolution”. Prof. Huo Zhengxin, Vice-Dean of CUPL School of International Law, spoke at the “Third B Section”. The topic of his speech was ”The Retrospect and Prospect of Common Law Education in Mainland China”.
On the afternoon of June 5, President Huang and other CUPL delegates also visited SHU. During the ensuing bilateral talks, President Joe Y. C. Wu of SHU introduced the SHU history and its curriculum his guests. He also spoke highly of the teamwork between CUPL and SHU. In his speech, President Huang reviewed the history of communication between the two universities. He mentioned that Mr. She-wo Cheng was the founder of SHU. And he mentioned how the ”The Cheng Siwei Experimental Class on Modern Finance”,named after Mr. Cheng Siwei, the son of Mr. She-wo Cheng, was jointly launched by CUPL and Chinese Academy of Sciences three years ago and has continued operating. Each year, Mr. Cheng Siwei comes to CUPL to give lectures for our students. All those factors naturally add up to intimate valuable relationship between the two universities. President Huang also highlighted the current situation of the eJournalism and Communication program at CUPL. He hoped that there would be closer cooperation and contact on that program between CUPL and SHU. After the meeting, President Wu accompanied our delegates on a tour of the SHU Library and the Memorial Hall of Mr. She-wo Cheng.
On June 7, President Huang and the CUPL delegation met and held a discussion with our exchange students, as well as our overseas students. Nearly twenty CUPL students currently studying at Taiwan University(TU), Tsing Hua University (THU), TPU, Chengchi University (CCU), and SU attended the meeting. President Huang learned details of these students’ studies and of their living in Taiwan, and handed out books and other gifts to them.
Later the same day, President Huang and the CUPL delegation met with a group of CUPL alumni who are living or working in Taiwan. President Huang briefed them on the achievements that our university has made in recent years, such as development, talent training, scientific studies, social services, international exchanges, and more. The meeting attendees held in-depth talks on matters of common interests.
On June 8, President Huang met with Professor Chyung-en Wu and Professor Chuan-hung Lee,two specially-engaged professors of CUPL. Their conversation was carried on in a cordial and friendly atmosphere.
