A CUPL delegation, led by President Prof. Huang Jin, recently travelled to the United States and Mexico and visited New York University (NYU), Columbia University, and Universidad Nacional Autónomade México (UNAM) from April 21 to April 25.
During its visit to NYU on April 21, the CUPL delegation held bilateral talks with NYU President John Sexton. The two sides had in-depth discussions on matters such as reform of judicial system in China, Chinese and American legal education, and the trend of higher education in the future, etc. President Huang formally invited President Sexton to visit our university at an appropriate time, with the aim of further accelerating the progress of bilateral cooperation. Trevor W. Morrison, Dean of NYU School of Law and Ira Belkin, Executive Director of US-Asia Law Institute (USALI) at NYU School of Law were also present at the meeting. The CUPL delegation visited USALI after the talks.
On April 22, President Huang and the CUPL delegation visited Columbia Law School (CLS) and met with Gillian Lester, Dean of CLS and Adam Kolker, the Deputy Dean. The two sides exchanged ideas on how to strengthen the existing cooperation and exchange between top-tier law schools such as CLS and CUPL in a comprehensive and all-around way. The two sides also conducted further discussions on matters such as the operating of the jointly-signed American Business Law Program, possible arrangements for faculty and student exchange programs in the coming days, and further cooperation. President Huang and other CUPL delegates toured the campus of Columbia University and its East Asian Library after the meeting.
During his stay in the United States, President Huang also paid a visit to the Education Section of the Chinese Consulate-General in New York (America). Educational Counselor Mr. Xu Yongji briefed our delegates on the roles and responsibilities of his section. President Huang expressed his hope that the Education Section could give more support to our university when we try to introduce and utilize the high quality local education resource, to popularize Chinese language internationally, or to recruit high-level talents from abroad.
In addition, Prof. Huang and the delegation also found time to meet with our alumni representatives, as well as our teachers and students who further their research and studies in the United States.
On April 24, President Huang left for Mexico and paid a visit to UNAM. Ing. Armando Lodigiani Rodriguez, Vice-Rector of UNAM, Mtro. Victor Hugo Perez Hernandez, Professor of its Law School, Mtra. Consuelo Davila, Dean of its School of Political and Social Sciences, and Lic. Angelica Castillo Salazar, Director of its International Office also attended the meeting. The two sides held in-depth talks on the implementation of the framework agreement that they previously concluded and reached consensuses on multiple other matters, like exchange of faculty members, student exchange, summer programs, and so on. President Huang specially briefed the hosts on our preparations for the planned China-Latin America and Caribbean Law & Public Policy Research Center. Our UNAM counterparts pledged firm support and active involvement in the establishment of the aforesaid center. After the meeting, President Huang toured the campus of UNAM.
During his stay in Mexico, President Huang also paid a visit to the Chinese Ambassador to Mexico, Mr. Qiu Xiaoqi. Mr. Qiu expressed his hope that CUPL could take advantage of the good bilateral relations between the two countries and advance the level of exchange and cooperation with Mexican education and academic institutions.
