Vice President Shi Jianzhong Leads Delegation to Brazil and Argentina and Attends the First Brazil-China Law Congress

From March 8 to 16, Prof. Shi Jianzhong, Vice President of China University of Political Science and Law (CUPL), led a delegation to attend the first Brazil-China Law Congress and visit several institutions, including the Superior Tribunal of Justice (STJ) of Brazil and the Chamber of Deputies of Argentina, etc. The delegation also visited several renowned universities such as the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro and the University of Buenos Aires, where they signed cooperation agreements, strengthening CUPL's academic ties with South America and yielding substantial outcomes. Among the delegation members were Prof. Li Juqian, Dean of the School of International Law, Prof. Yu Wenxuan, Vice-Dean of the School of Civil, Commercial and Economic Law, and Prof. Wang Zhiyuan, Vice-Dean of the School of Criminal Justice, each of whom delivered speeches at the congress.

The First Brazil-China Law Congress, co-hosted by Brazil’s Superior Tribunal of Justice (STJ) and China University of Political Science and Law (CUPL), gathered over 20 jurists from 18 renowned Chinese and Brazilian law schools, along with scores of Brazilian judges. At the event, CUPL and STJ, serving as the conveners for the Chinese and Brazilian sides respectively, jointly signed an initiative with the participating law schools to establish the China-Brazil Legal Collaboration Alliance.

The congress garnered strong attention and support from relevant authorities in both countries. The opening ceremony featured addresses by: Zhu Qingqiao, Chinese Ambassador to Brazil; Mr. Luís Roberto Barroso, President of the Supreme Federal Court of Brazil; Mr. Camilo Santana, Minister of Education of Brazil; and Mr. Eduardo Paes Saboia, Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Brazil. STJ President Antonio Herman Benjamin chaired the opening ceremony. Xinhua News Agency gave prompt coverage of the event.

In an effort to strengthen institutional cooperation with leading South American law schools, the CUPL delegation led by Vice President Shi Jianzhong visited the Federal University of Rio de Janeiro on March 10 (local time). During the visit, Vice President Shi met with Prof. Cássia Curan Turci, Vice President of the University, and the two sides signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) on international cooperation.

After concluding its Brazil agenda, the delegation arrived in Argentina for the next leg of its South American tour. On the morning of March 14, Vice President Shi and his delegation had in-depth discussion at the Chamber of Deputies of Argentina with Congressman Carlos D’Alessandro and other members, focusing on legal education cooperation and academic exchange. Vice President Shi emphasized CUPL’s commitment to advancing China-Argentina cooperation in legal education, academic research, and legislative studies.

Later that afternoon, the delegation visited the School of Social Sciences of the University of Buenos Aires, where Vice President Shi met with Dean Ana Josefina Arias and other faculty members to discuss enhancing academic exchanges, co-organizing academic activities, and promoting postgraduate student exchanges.

Vice President Shi then delivered a special lecture to the faculty and students on the Chinese legal system.
