CUPL President Huang Jin Meets with the Barbados Education Delegation

In the afternoon of July 13, 2017, CUPL President Huang Jin met with June Chandle, Permanent Secretary of Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation of Barbados and Glenroy Cumberbatch, Registrar of Caribbean Examination Council.

During the meeting, President Huang Jin firstly welcomed the delegation on behalf of CUPL. Then, he made a detailed introduction about CUPL to the delegation, including its history, educational philosophy, discipline construction, international initiatives and so on. He said that CUPL attaches great importance to the communication and cooperation with countries of the Caribbean and South America. He also said that the Confucius Institute co-founded by the University of the West Indies at Cave Hill campus (UWI) and CUPL was not only an essential platform for international communication and cooperation between the two schools, but also a precious bridge of language study, culture exchange and friendship for peoples of the two countries. President Huang Jin hoped that, on the basis of the co-founded Confucius Institute, Barbados Ministry of Education, Science, Technology and Innovation and the Caribbean Examination Council would make further efforts to enhance the communication and cooperation between CUPL and UWI as well as other schools in the Caribbean region. President Huang also extended a warm invitation to students from Barbados to get enrolled in exchange programs of CUPL.

June Chandle thanked President Huang for the warm reception and said that she felt very delighted to visit CUPL which is a prestigious university in China. She spoke highly of the school’s achievements in legal education and expressed strong support for the promotion of the Chinese language in the Caribbean region and for the facilitation of culture communication between the two countries. She specifically recalled various communication and exchange activities between China and the Caribbean regions held by the Barbados Confucius Institute, including the First Joint Conference of Confucius Institutes in the Caribbean region, the Moot Court Competition and so on. Through this visit, June Chandle wished to expand the scope of cooperation between CUPL and universities in the Caribbean region to more fields, including student exchange programs, academic research and so on, thus promoting fruitful cooperation results in various fields.

Glenroy Cumberbatch mainly introduced the Caribbean Examination Council, including its designed missions, development history, current situation and international cooperation with overseas universities. He said this visit to China was intended to facilitate the Chinese language to be integrated into the examinations of the Caribbean Examination Council and to promote the popularity and application of the Chinese language in the 19 countries of the Caribbean region. Besides classes and textbooks of the Chinese language, he hoped that students in the Caribbean region could know more about the Chinese culture and language through various cultural activities; in addition, he hoped that CUPL would send more Chinese language teachers and volunteers to the Caribbean region.

Later, the two sides exchanged views on the promotion of Moot Court Competition, the launching of summer programs, exchange programs for students and teachers, financial support, construction and development of Confucius Institutes and so on.

After the meeting, the delegation was invited to visit the Laboratory of Evidence Law and Forensic Science and the Forensic Science Museum of CUPL.
