On May 6, 2014, an Asia Event in Legal World Series was held at Main arts building, Bangor University, co-organized by Law School and Confucius Institute at Bangor University. The Legal World is a monthly student led project that is tailored to students’ interests, with themed workshops looking at legal systems in different regions based on the continents. As a part of the Legal World series, the Asia event aimed at looking into the legal world in Asia, especially in China and South Asia, with support from the Confucius Institute.
At 6 p.m., the Asia Event started with an opening speech by Mr. Stephen Clear, Legal Research Support Officer in Law School. Ms. Meng Yu, from the Confucius Institute, delivered a lecture on Introduction on Chinese Legal System, which illustrated how Chinese legal system worked and what is the legal service market like in China. During the lecture, issues such as foreign investing in China and whether foreigners can practice as a lawyer triggered heated discussion among attendees. After that, Bangladesh speaker Mr. Kamrul Hassan gave a presentation on South Asian Association for Regional Cooperation (SAARC), an economic and geopolitical cooperation among eight member states in South Asia.
Across the series, the event was a success, with a total of 138 students from a total of 25 different countries attending the series in the end. It helps to promote internationalisation as well as cultural exchange in legal education.
Ms. Meng Yu, from the Confucius Institute talked about Chinese legal system and what is the legal service market like in China.
