On April 9, 2014, GHEORGHE LAZAR National College in Bucharest, Romania, welcomed the arrival of its annual cultural event—the “Chinese Day”. Under the lead of Bian Zhengdong who is the Head of the Education Section at the Embassy of the People’s Republic of China in Romania, Chinese language teachers from the Confucius Institute at University of Bucharest (UB) and some of the Chinese teaching schools in the capital area participated in this activity.
In order to give the high school students a chance to personally experience the unique charm of Chinese culture without having to leave their classroom, the Confucius Institute at UB lent cheongsams to the school. Cheongsams were regarded as an embodiment of Chinese culture. This arrangement allowed the students to try on some distinctive Chinese national costumes for themselves to experience and allowed for a vivid exhibition of Chinese traditional dress and culture.
As part of the event, the faculty members also performed a solo on the Chinese flute, demonstrated various types of Chinese paper-cutting, and performed a graceful and elegant tea ceremony for the student audience. At the end, students of the Chinese learning class also staged some fantastic cultural performances such as the rainbow ribbon dancing, singing Chinese songs, reciting poetry, and a cheongsam fashion show, rounding a great day off on a high note.
Teachers of the Confucius Institute promised that they would continue to support Chinese language teaching and the related cultural activities among Bucharest middle and primary schools.
