On February 12, 2013, CUPL overseas confucius institute – Confucius Institute at Bangor University held a joint Chinese Lunar New Year Party at the International Department of Bangor University with the North Wales Chinese School. Bangor University is the site of CUPL's first Confucius Institute. Mr. Bryn Hughes, who serves as a Member of Parliament (MP) and the Mayor of Bangor, attended the celebration with his wife. In addition, over 100 dignitaries from Bangor's law, business and education circles, as well as teachers and students from Bangor University took part in the get-together.
Mayor Bryn Hughes extended his New Year's greetings to all the event's attendees. He expressed his wishes that the Confucius Institute would continue to improve over the coming year, and that cooperation between Bangor University and CUPL would acquire greater achievements in the future. He shared his hopes for a permanent friendship between China and the UK.
Professor Dermot Cahill, Dean of Bangor University's Law School, and Professor Wei Shi and Professor Zhang Liying, the foreign and Chinese Co-Directors of the Confucius Institute, took turns expressing their warm acknowledgment of Mr. Hughes' remarks.
Soon afterwards, students from Bangor University and North Wales Chinese School staged a special performance of Chinese culture. They showcased Chinese martial arts, Street Dance, Zheng (Chinese zither) and sang folk songs. The performers also exhibited their educational achievements. The praise and applause was showered from the audience.
The 2013 Chinese Lunar New Year Celebrations hosted by the Confucius Institute at Bangor University lasted from February 9 – 24. During that period, the Institute staged a tour of performances as well as a popularizing campaign of Chinese Culture in many primary schools, secondary schools, and a school for the handicapped in North Wales.
