Bangor University (BU) was founded in 1884, was one of the three original constituent colleges of the University of Wales, and also one of the core members of the Welsh University Alliance. BU is a comprehensive research university covering wide-ranging disciplines, such as liberal arts, science, engineering, medicine, law, and business. Among them, 11 branches of learning rank in the UK’s top 20. The BU’s College of Business accounting and finance program is ranked first in the UK. In addition, its electronic engineering holds a second place UK rank. Currently, there are more than 9,000 students enrolled in BU, including over 1,000 postgraduate candidates. Among those registered students, more than 1,500 are international students from over 90 countries.

Establishment of the Confucius Institute at Bangor University

On October 27, 2011, in Beijing, President Huang Jin attended four-party talks among Hanban (Confucius Institute Headquarters), CUPL, Welsh Government of UK and Bangor University. During the meeting, the two universities agreed to co-establish a Confucius Institute.

On February 27, 2012, Hanban (Confucius Institute Headquarters) approved BU’s Plan of Co-establishing a Confucius Institute with China University of Political Science and Law.

On April 17, 2012, at London, CUPL and BU officially signed a cooperation agreement on co-establishing a Confucius Institute. At the time, Mr. Li Changchun, a member of the Politburo Standing Committee of the CPC Central Committee,was coincidentally leading a Chinese delegation to pay an official goodwill visit to the UK. Mr. Li took advantage of the timing to attend the signing ceremony of the cooperation agreement. CUPL Vice President Zhang Guilin attended the ceremony on behalf of CUPL. UK Representatives were headed by British Foreign Secretary William Hague. Professor John G. Hughes, Vice Chancellor of BU, and Dr. Wu Xinyu, Director of International Development of BU were also present at the ceremony.

On September 10, 2012, the unveiling ceremony for the Confucius Institute at Bangor University was held in Bangor, North Wales, UK. Mr. Shen Yang, Minister-Counselor of Chinese Embassy in UK, CUPL President Huang Jin and Mr. Carwyn Jones, the First Minister of the Welsh Government, attended the ceremony.
