University of the West Indies (UWI) is an autonomously regional university co-founded and supported by the following 17 English-speaking countries in the Caribbean: Anguilla, Antigua and Barbuda, the Bahamas, Barbados, Belize, the British Virgin Islands, the Cayman Islands, Dominica, Grenada, Guyana, Jamaica, Montserrat, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago, Turks and Caicos.

Each of them is either a member of the Commonwealth of Nations or a British Overseas Territory. The aim of UWI is to help “unlock the potential for economic and cultural growth” in the West Indies.

UWI consists of three physical campuses: Mona in Jamaica, St. Augustine in Trinidad and Tobago, and Cave Hill in Barbados. There is also an open campus.

UWI was initially founded in 1948 at Mona in Jamaica as an independent external college of the University of London, and didn’t achieve independent university status until 1962. The St. Augustine Campus in Trinidad, formerly the Imperial College of Tropical Agriculture (ICTA), was established in 1961, followed by the Cave Hill Campus in Barbados in 1963. Leading disciplines of UWI at Cave Hill Campus in Barbados include the Sciences of Law, Humanities and Education, Science and Technology, and Medicine. The Cave Hill Campus overlooks the island’s capital and principal commercial centre, Bridgetown, which is just five miles away. The total number of students at Cave Hill Campus at present is approximately 9,000.

Notable UWI alumni include former President of Trinidad and Tobago George Maxwell Richards, former Prime Minister of Trinidad and Tobago Patrick Augustus Mervyn Manning, former Prime Minister of Barbados Owen Arthur, former Prime Minister of Jamaica Percival Noel James Patterson, and Nobel Prize Laureate (Literature) Derek Walcott, among others.

The Board of Advisors of the Confucius Institute at the University of the West Indies at Cave Hill in Barbados is responsible for the guiding principles and policies of its development. The Foreign and Chinese Co-Directors are responsible for the daily management of the Institute on behalf of the Board.
